KanColle’s second episode slows down the pace set by its predecessor. While the first episode focused on introducing some of the main players and then launching them into a battle, the second episode allows us to see these characters a little more up close, particularly our main character, Fubuki. If you recall from the previous episode, Fubuki had never been in an actual combat situation before, but was launched into battle anyway. This episode showcases Fubuki’s efforts to improve herself so that she can be an asset in future battles, and how her friends come alongside her to help her train and improve herself. These particular incidents make for an endearing episode with a decent message, although this still isn’t a show you want your children watching.
For starters, I am still suspicious as to what, exactly, the nature of the relationships between the girls is supposed to be. While there really haven’t been any outright claims or expressions of homosexuality as of yet (the closest thing is the relationship between the two girls who seem to go everywhere together), I still remain suspicious of the writers’ intentions. Perhaps I’ve just seen too much anime, or perhaps I’ve been too influenced by a pre-show comment I read on another Christian anime blog, but I just suspect that they will be going “there,” in subtext if not directly. Ironically, I typically hate when people look at relationships in anime and read too much into them.
Additionally, KanColle simultaneously turns down and turns up the fanservice this time around. On the one hand, the incidents of fanservice aren’t nearly frequent; on the other hand, the major incident in this episode may be worse in-and-of itself than what was in the previous episode. While there are a couple of minor fanservice incidents, the main occurrence involves Fubuki and Akagi in a bath. Nothing sexual happens, and the scene certainly isn’t as graphic as it could be, but it is still there and worth noting for the discerning viewer.
Overall, as of this episode I was still at a weird juncture with the show. On the one hand, the content wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected it to be; on the other hand, there is still some concerning content, and the show doesn’t seem to have a whole lot to offer overall. Cute girls and a strange plot basically sum it up. Maybe I’ll give it one more episode.
A Christian Perspective:
Galatians 6:2 – Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
The theme of this verse shines through in this episode, with several of the girls coming together to aid Fubuki in her training. Instead of leaving her out to dry, the girls each try to help in their own ways (although their help does unintentionally get a little overbearing when Fubuki finds herself unable to sleep as a result!) Still, the episode shows different characters lending their individual knowledge and skills to training Fubuki, ultimately preparing her for the test that will determine whether she gets to stay with the squad or not. I believe the implication here is that, without them, she wouldn’t have a chance.
Just as the different girls had different skills to contribute to Fubuki’s training, so we as Christians have different skills that we can contribute to helping others within the Body of Christ. Perhaps we’re not all equipped to handle every task as well as the next person, but we can still do something, and we can especially step up when our particular skill set is useful. Much like Fubuki’s friends, we should help bear the burdens of our brothers and sisters to the best of our abilities.
Language: 1 “j**z”, 1 “h*ll”
Alcohol/Drug Use: None
Nudity/Sex/Fanservice: The intro may contain a quick underwear shot, and it also shows a couple of the girls in suggestive poses (though clothed); one character is wearing a very tiny skirt with her underwear straps sticking out from the top and her buttcrack exposed; a female character is shown with a towel wrapped around her, which basically exposes cleavage—Fubuki’s face also ends up squashing into this character’s chest; the aforementioned character takes Fubuki’s top off (which shows a bit of Fubuki’s bra); Fubuki is shown walking into the bath in nothing but a towel; there is a close up of Fubuki’s bare back; Fubuki is shown in the bath, but the most you see is cleavage; Akagi is also shown in the bath in about as much detail; Fubuki is shown standing up in the bath, but her arms obscure her chest; both girls make suggestive noises due to enjoyment of the bath; Nagato’s clothing (shirt that shows midriff); there is a very slight underwear shot as Fubuki starts her training exercise (probably completely missable if you’re not paying attention for the purpose of reviewing); the beginning of the closing credits shows Fubuki sort of curled up and naked
Violence: Battle scenes in the intro; a character is hit with a piece of chalk; Fubuki’s training exercises and training test have her firing rounds at targets
Other: Two female characters are shown to be close, though nothing inappropriate has been outwardly stated
