Over the past several years I have seen many bands and artists who are considered Christian try to avoid the label. But why? In the music industry when you are labeled a “Christian artist” then you are not taken seriously. However, people and the local Top 40 station do not care whether you are Christian or not as long as you make good music… and never mention Jesus in the song. That is why some bands never mention Jesus in their music, so that the world accepts them.
But who gives a flying rip whether the world accepts us or not?
Unfortunately, this is not only a “Christian artist” problem, but also an everyday Christian problem. At some point, someone is going to bring up talks of religion. Some people stay silent during these discussions and some walk away when they start. My worst fear is seeing someone who is clearly not Christian say they are Christian in the conversation. One explanation is that they grew up in church when they lived at home. In fact the other day someone said they go only on Christmas, because God and them have a “deal.” They then proceed to cuss and act like everyone else.
Ah! I am getting off subject.
I know throughout the years people have asked me where I stand. This typically comes from my lack of using four letter words and waiting till marriage to have sex. People are dumbfounded by this and I explain that as a Christian I want to do what is pleasing to God. Sometimes the conversation ends there and sometimes it continues.
I have not always been like this and I am sure others know what I mean when I mention high school. During my time there, I would avoid all talks of my faith and even used to deny it out of the fear of being made fun of. After all, people associate the word Christian as the person who says they are Christian and doesn’t show any fruit, or the person who Bible thumps and begs for you to go to their mega-awesome church. Hint to everyone: Befriend people before you invite them. They will be more willing to go.
So what is the big deal of denying our faith? At least we won’t do any damage to the Kingdom of God if we say we are Christian and then later screw up. Well…
“So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.” ESV
I do not know about you, but I am not going to give Jesus any reason to deny me before God. You think the pressure of the world is bad? Well, imagine the fear of seeing Jesus denying you.
So do not be afraid to tell others you are a Christian. Just make sure you are really living your life for Christ and not for yourself. Others will see that and wonder what is different about you. Sounds cheesy and like a certain 90’s Newboys song (it is), but it is true all the same.
