I’ve always been skeptical about the need for gaming glasses. I felt like they were a gimmick sold to gamers to help improve their gaming. How could a pair of tinted glasses assist someone who sits in front of a computer or television screen?
When Gunnar Optiks sent me a pair to try out, naturally I was cynical. I do engage in gaming at several-hour intervals, so I figured it would be a chance for me to see if I could notice a difference in the way I gamed.
Initially, it felt strange to wear anything on my face when sitting down at the computer. The yellowish-amber tint of the glasses did cause me to feel unfamiliar with what I was doing, but the longer I played, the more I got used to the glasses.
I wore the ultra light and comfortable Heroes of the Storm Siege glasses, which included interchangeable sockets (allowing for customization with your favorite Heroes of the Storm characters) The glasses sat nicely on my face; as I have a wider face, the Siege glasses were catered more to me.
The tint is initially off-putting, but something about the amber lenses made certain colors “pop” more than others. I compare this phenomena to glasses that some people wear for driving at night: the light is collected and displayed a bit brighter, but with a softness that makes it easier on your vision.
The longer I wore the glasses, the more I felt like I needed them. I had never really noticed eye-strain before, but now I feel certain I’d been straining my eyes and didn’t know it. I noticed less of a difference when I used the glasses for console gaming, as I sit relatively far from my television. Up close to a monitor is where these glasses truly shine.
Gunnar has created a product that most gamers need, even if consumers don’t realize it yet. For those who spend hours in front of a monitor, whether gaming or working in an office, this is a well-worth investment. Gunnar Optiks glasses won’t make you a better gamer, that comes with skill and ability, but they will spare your retinas from self-induced gaming abuse, not to mention the complications that could be avoided by prolonged monitor induced eye-strain
