11 Beautifully Geeky Ugly Christmas Sweatshirts

We geeks are a proud people. Whenever we make a purchase, we usually want it to reflect our inner geek. This usually leads us to buying things like coffee mugs, water bottles, clothing, and other everyday items from online specialty retailers that have our favorite characters or logos on them (since local stores usually don’t carry these rare goods). With Christmas time just around the corner, we will undoubtedly be attending parties or events that will require us to don an “ugly Christmas sweater.” Fortunately, we at Geeks Under Grace have done the homework for you in finding these niche items.

The search can be even a little more taxing for Christians (That sweater with the puking reindeer or dog urinating on a snowman might not be so well-received at a church Christmas party.) So this list will contain shirts that have characters (or allusions to characters) from various geek fandoms and will be tastefully tacky. Also, if you’ve ever shopped for an ugly Christmas sweater you’ll know that if you snooze you lose, so we made sure to make this article available to you in a timely manner. A few things to note before we get started:

  1. These are actually sweatshirts that look like “ugly sweaters” since actual sweaters with geeky characters are nearly impossible to find.
  2. These are specialty items, so most of them are a little pricy.
  3. Some of these categories have more than one design.
  4. Most of these shirts are unisex in nature, but are listed as men’s sizes.

With those things noted, we hope this list provides you with the insight you need to make your “ugly Christmas sweater” purchase this year. The pictures in this article link directly to where you can purchase these shirts if you would like to buy them.

If you are looking to express your inner-geek with an iconic character that a lot of the people at your party are likely to know, this Spidey shirt would make a great purchase. The green outline makes this shirt that much more delightfully tacky.

He-Man and She-Ra

This shirt, having a mullet-brandishing warrior from the 80’s, adds to its cheesiness. Anyone who doesn’t know who He-Man and She-Ra are will find this one particularly funny.

DC Comics

Wearing this shirt with the three most iconic heroes from DC Comics will definitely catch people’s attention. It doesn’t have the traditional “ugly sweater” feel as much as some of the others, but would make a great shirt for a Christmas party anyway.

As a popular character in geek culture, Deadpool gets the shallow end of the merchandising pool. Getting this shirt will draw the attention (and envy) of fanboys and fangirls wherever you wear it during the Christmas season.

 Star Wars

Both of these shirts do a great job of capturing the traditional feel of the ugly sweater, as well as highlighting the characters. Whether you choose the dark side (Vader) or not (Yoda) you will definitely catch the eye of fellow Star Wars fans.

With the highly popular movie franchise, these Transformer shirts will definitely catch some attention. The smaller, cutesy Optimus and Megatron make a good option if you choose to not go with the Optimus Clause shirt.

The classic Lion O phrase makes for a great tagline on a Christmas shirt. Partnering the rallying cry with the jolly shout of Santa Clause adds to the fun (and cheesy) theme of this shirt. Thundercats, ho ho ho!

Not every geek is into 80’s and 90’s TV and movie franchises. This Pac-Man shirt makes a great alternative for anyone who paid their dues (in quarters) to the arcade in years past, or have downloaded the game on their smartphones recently.

 “Donkey Kong”

This clever combination of Santa giving gifts and the Donkey Kong arcade game makes for a great design. The shirt style is closer to the traditional look of the “ugly Christmas sweater” as well.

 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Few merchandising franchises have had as large of an impact as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The kiddy look of the turtles from the 80’s/90’s cartoon series adds to the fun theme of these shirts.

 “Game of Thrones”

[amazon template=image&asin=B00NIMYZ3K]

Santa rules the seven kingdoms of the North Pole as he sits upon the candy cane throne! All of your Game of Thrones friends will appreciate this reference if you don this sweatshirt at their party.

While this isn’t a completely comprehensive list of every geeky, faux, ugly sweater, it should give you a healthy selection to choose from. So if you were planning on bailing on that yearly Christmas party because you couldn’t find anything to wear, I’m sorry, but you’ll have to come up with a different excuse.

Merry Christmas, from Geeks Under Grace!
