Hello and welcome! This is the Geeks Under Grace daily devotional where we dive into the Bible everyday. We take devotionals from bible.com and read the verses, devotional, and give our own commentary. Sometimes we will have multiple writers, but most of the time it will be just me. I hope you enjoy and comment with your own commentary.
This devotional is titled “Red – The Overflow Devo”. It is only 7 days long. I use the ESV bible but feel free to use the version of your choosing.
“21For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
This song is about being happy with who God made us to be and what he has blessed us with. We are not to envy one another’s belongings and gifts, for God has blessed us each in a different way. So often the media and TV feed us this lifestyle where we can all have “this” if we just do “this.” A picture is painted for us everywhere we turn that we need to keep up with the Jones. Sure, we all like to have nice things, but in the end they will not get us any closer to God and His promise of eternity. Envy is something that comes from within. It can well up inside when we forget that God has blessed us already. There is a parable that says, “It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.” Look at what a man invests his time and money into and there you will most likely find his heart too. We need to be careful and guard our hearts from the things the world tells us will make us happy and lead to a better life. Again, there is nothing wrong with making a life for yourself. God wants us to live and be prosperous. Things go wrong when we subtract God from the equation and our hearts focus more on what we have instead of on what we have been given. God’s plan is perfect. When we are living inside that plan, we experience life as he intended us to.
Stuff will make you happy. A boyfriend/girlfriend will fill the hole in your heart. These are both lies that the world tells us. Are they true? If they were then I wouldn’t be calling them lies, now would I? The only one who can make you happy is… well I feel redundant just saying it because you know… Jesus. I imagine not many atheists are following these devotionals. So keep your eyes focused on Him and know that He has great things in store for you.
