Identity – Day 4

Welcome to something new I am doing on the site. This will be a learning process for me as I go along and I hope you can join me. I will pick a devotional on (feel free to go there and pick the same reading plan) and be posting the verse(s), devotional, and my own personal commentary. Feel free to leave your own commentary in the comments as I would love to read your guys thoughts. Also, I will have music that may or may not apply to the devotional. We can all love new music being introduced to us.
This devotional is titled “Identity”. It is 4 days long. I use the ESV bible but feel free to use the version of your choosing. Michael Morejon will be assisting me with this devotional series by providing his own commentary as well.

2 Corinthians 5:16-17 “From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
Galatians 5:1 “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

There is no such thing as a perfect identity. If you always try to be someone that others will like, you’ll end up not having peace in your life. To have peace in our lives, we must listen to God and get comfortable being who He wants us to be. We’re meant to rely on Him, to know His love for us, and trust that God shows us our identity.
Part of living a godly life is having a group of friends who support you in your relationship with Him. Being a part of a godly community is vital in not forgetting that who we are is defined by God and not others.

2 Corinthians talks about how once we are in Christ, we are a new creation. This is a commonly referred to passage in the bible and for good reason. We are no longer our old selves once we surrender to Christ. We have a fresh, clean slate. Galatians 5:1 tells us that Christ has set us free from Jewish ceremonial laws and regulations. We are still held to God’s moral standards (5:14-6:1). I am glad to see we finally get to dive into Ecclesiastes. It is my second favorite book in the bible, only behind Revelation. We are to be surrounded by believers. The devil wants us to be alone so he can pick us off one by one. Divide and conquer in a sense. This is why getting involved in a church is very important. Heck, small groups are a great way to go as well (which you can find at most churches). To think you can be fine without a church and other believers to help you and help each other is just foolish.

Let’s be honest, there will come a time where you will feel alone and confused about where your identity comes from, even if you’ve been practicing the tips on the other three days. That’s where you need others who can pray for you, lift you up and help you in those times. Whether it’s a close friend, family member or church leader that you trust, you need these relationships when you are having one of those days.
Do you have any of these kinds of relationships that you can go to for help? Invest time into these people and be transparent with them. Open up about your struggles and ask them for prayer or any wisdom they can impart. Be careful who you go to though, be sure it’s someone that you trust and feel comfortable sharing with.
