Bible Study — Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

No Way Home

Facilitator Note: We encourage facilitators to take this Bible study and expound on it throughout the week, allowing it to be a springboard for deeper conversation and personal meditation.

PRESS START

No one said it would be easy…just that we would have someone with us all the way. The road marked with suffering can be traveled with joyful singing. This is easier said than done. Struggles will be a part of life. When the webs meet the road, will we remember our training? What happens when there’s no going back? Did we make a wrong turn at some point? Is this all a divine plan?

Ask: What problems during our life do we blame on ourselves, or something or someone else?

EQUIP

WARNING: Movie spoilers ahead

We are not alone. When the multiverse split open, Peter found himself faced with losing Aunt May. A turning point came when his multiverse counterparts shared their pain of losing Uncle Ben. This moment wasn’t for Peter alone, but for all three Peter Parkers.

“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” — Romans 12:15

We haven’t had our multiverse counterparts help us in our crucial moments.

Yet.

Until then, we have friends, family, and community (including the GUG Discord and Facebook group!).

In Exodus, when the Israelites fought the Amalekites, Moses had a task to do. With his staff above his head, the Israelites were victorious. But his hands grew tired as the fighting continued. It was very likely that if his hands fell, Israel would not prevail. The Bible tells us Aaron and Hur came to his side and held up his arms. This great story of Aaron and Hur helping Moses, as well as Moses helping Aaron and his men, helped save Israel from destruction.

The greatest truth of all is this: Even if we find ourselves physically alone, we have a God who is truly with us at all times. He will never leave us or forsake us, His Word promises. Jesus was tempted in every way we are, but He didn’t sin. We are never alone.

Ask: Is Jesus far from us at times, or are we far from Jesus?

LEVEL UP

Read: Exodus 17:8-13

8 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua,“Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” 10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

MOD

Ask: Where else can we find examples of bearing another’s burden in the Bible?

Ask: Were there times we helped someone, or someone helped us?

Ask: Why can’t we be alone?

PRAY

Pray: Our God, in this world, feeling alone is so widespread. We’re feeling more alone in a world that is more connected than ever before. We thank You for Your Holy Spirit that connects us to You. Thank You that we can find You wherever we are. Thank You that there are people around us to help us bear our burdens, and that we can help them bear their burdens as well. Lead us in living every day in Your presence.

NEXT LEVEL

Read: Hebrews 4:14-16

“We have a great high priest, who has gone into heaven, and he is Jesus the Son of God. This is why we must hold on to what we have said about him. Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin! So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved grace, and we will find help.”
