Treasure Chest: Catholic Gamers, Vic Mignogna, Fans for Christ, and God in Hyrule

Welcome to Treasure Chest, where articles from across the internet intersect the geek and the spiritual. Whether you seek a review on the latest Christian video game, hot anime articles, or other geek-related interests, you’ve come to the right place. I do my best to find the best of the best in articles, videos, and anything else I can find a link to that has to do with faith and geeks for the month. I just got a long list of new sites to look through this time (thanks to our Editor-in-Chief Casey), so I hope to bring more variety to the Treasure Chest column than I usually do. I gave Geeks Under Grace articles their own section just so they are not mixed up with the others. If you have any suggestions, comments, or just want to tell me which post you liked the best, let me know! Any feedback, good or bad, is a big help 🙂

Gaming Articles of the Month

  • Friar monks made a video game to attract people to their service? Yes they did, and you can watch it here. Also, give the game a try and see if you can collect all the candles! [Fox 5 News]download (1)
  • Remember when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of a Catholic church? Well, a fellow Christian gamer just put up his 76 theses of being a critic and they are quite interesting. [C.T. Casberg]

Anime Articles of the Month

  • Neighborhoodotaku recommends some great anime that Christians can safely consume. Whether you’re a believer or not, his list includes classics and newcomers worth adding to your list. Personally, I still have to watch Anohan. [Christian Anime Reviews]angel-beats-full-1926512
  • Do you consider Levi to be a kind character in Attack on Titan? Casey believes so, and she discusses why here. [Geekdom House]
  • One of my favorite columns at Beneath The Tangles is “Something More.” This time it’s all about Evangelion, Islamic anime, Sword Art Online, and various other titles. You’ll definitely find something you enjoy. [Beneath The Tangles]
  • A very popular voice actor by the name of Vic Mignogna who is famous for playing the voice of Edward Elric from Full Metal Alchemist did an interview (audio and transcripted) with JP, head of the Beneath The Tangles blog. He shares his faith, stories from cons, and how God is using his testimony to witness to his fans. A must-listen, and it’s not very long either. [Beneath The Tangles]

Misc. Geeky Articles of the Month

  • The “116 Life” highlights different people who are living a life unashamed for Christ in their area of ministry. This time they interviewed Ryan Green, the maker of That Dragon, Cancer which has received much acclaim for its emotional impact on gamers. [Reach Records]main
  • This post is not from this month, but it was a good read on the history of Fans for Christ at DragonCon. FFC was the first Christian geek group, founded before GUG was conceived. They are not as active as they once were, but I find it inspiring to see what they have done for God as geeks. [The Faith Geek]

Top Geeks Under Grace Articles of the Month

  • I have been waiting for a long time for this article. This is the ultimate guide to Christianity in the Legend of Zelda franchise. Kelly did a fantastic job culminating every detail from all the games that relates to God or biblical symbolism. If you read any GUG article this month, make it this one. [Finding God in Hyrule]
  • Do you ever got stuck playing more video games than you do spending time with your Maker? Has your Bible reading, devotional time, and time in God’s presence been drowned out by the latest digital conquest? Michael P. struggled with this dilemma and so decided to fast from video games for Lent. Find out what happened and what his conclusions were. [40 Days Without Video Games]
  • It was Easter Sunday this past March, and Chris compares the Resurrection of Christ to Star Wars. [Through the lens of the Resurrection]
