RWBY, the immensely popular anime from Rooster Teeth, is now getting its own board game. Designed by Bryan and Benjamin Pope from Arcane Wonders, the two companies are teaming up to bring the game to life via Kickstarter. They also sent me a small demo kit that shows a portion of the game’s combat system, so I can talk about that some.
In the game, one player takes his or her character and fights on center stage against the villain, while the other players battle Grimm and work on side objectives. The fight involves trying to predict what level of card your opponent will play; the villain card backs give hints as to the possible range of the upcoming attack. And of course, it’s not just about playing cards with numbers on them – there are special abilities, ultimate attacks, and plenty of sticky situations to fight your way through. I don’t know how final the cards are, but the art was good, and I especially liked the clear, crisp graphic design. As someone who plays a lot of engine-building card games with rules-breaking text, this looks like a pretty exciting game for fans of the show – RWBY‘s version of Marvel Legendary, if you will. And if that sounds like something you want to get it on, check it out on Kickstarter here.
