Welcome to the Geeks Under Grace predictions of WWE’s Payback
Baltimore, Maryland is home to WWE’s 2015 Payback event. This year’s payback is the third annual in the series and is available on the WWE Network (and is even free to new subscribers). Thus far in the summer of 2015, the WWE roster feels fresh with many relatively new faces and match-ups. Complaints of recycled booking are at an all time low, and this show specifically has a lot of excitement surrounding it, as many expect high-quality in the ring competition.
Curtis Axel & Macho Mandow vs. The Ascension
This contest is the kickoff match for the event. I am expecting to see crowd favorites Curtis Axel and Macho Mandow to get the W in their match with the Ascension. Axel and Mandow will easily get the support of the WWE Universe in their match with Konnor and Viktor. I may watch this match just for the comedy relief, which may be a sin, being somewhat of a professional wrestling purist.
Winner: Axel and Mandow
Naomi & Tamina vs. The Bella Twins
I am an automatic fan of Tamina Snuka because her last name is Snuka. I would have found this match interesting if it had been Naomi vs. Tamina. I am starting to think the Bella Twins have been involved in more WWE PPV’s than any other WWE Diva in history. In case you’re not picking up on this, I have little interest in this match due to Nikki & Brie’s over-exposure.
Winner: Naomi & Tamina
King Barrett vs. Neville
Believe it or not, both of the men in this match originally had real first names. With the “man gravity forgot” involved, this match is a must-see. Neville has been totally impressive in his debut to the WWE main roster, despite having misplaced his first name. Both Neville and Barrett are entertaining to watch and believable in their work style. Payback being a WWE Network exclusive, I see Neville winning in this match as his first big win as a member of the main roster.
WWE Tag Team Championship Match
2/3 Falls Match
The New Day vs. Cesaro & Tyson Kidd
The rivalry here between Cesaro & Tyson Kidd vs. The New Day is getting major attention by the WWE Universe and other WWE Superstars. I see The New Day retaining their WWE Tag Team Championships here. There is so much interest in this rivalry that I dont see the WWE bringing it to an end for at least another month.
Winner: The New Day
Sheamus vs. Dolph Ziggler
Dolph Ziggler is still a mid card superstar who manages to get a victory here and there but most likely won’t make it to the main event level anytime soon. Ziggler beat Sheamus at last month’s Extreme Rules, and it meant something. Even with a new look and attitude, the Celtic Warrior lost to Dolph Ziggler at a WWE network-exclusive event and that’s a big deal. Even if the Showoff is doomed to a career as an enhancement talent, we Ziggler fans love to see him win. Fans are interested to see just how long Ziggler can keep coming out on top, so I see him winning this match and losing to Sheamus at the next big show.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Ryback vs. Bray Wyatt
Ryback is actually liked again by the WWE universe, which is proof that a career can be resurrected. Bray Wyatt is still strong and still entertaining, but I miss the Wyatt family. I see Bray winning in this contest because a loss would be detrimental in my opinion.
Winner: Bray Wyatt
United States Championship Match
I Quit Match
John Cena vs Rusev
At February’s Fastlane, Rusev conquered Cena. At Wrestlemania and Extreme Rules, John Cena won. Monday’s Raw John Cena made it clear to the WWE Universe that he does not quit. It is difficult for me to predict how this match will end, but I know Rusev needs to come out strong. Rusev, formerly known as Alexander Rusev, was booked strong for months, but even he can only lose so much before he loses credibility as a serious threat. For the good of the championship, I want to see it stay around John Cena’s waist, but not at the expense of Rusev’s career.
WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match
Fatal 4-Way Match
Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton vs. Dean Ambrose
Now look at that. All three former members of the Shield and Randy Orton. Three brand new faces to the WWE main event picture and Randy Orton. Three men that have unfinished business, full of potential, and Randy Orton. Now, out of these four superstars, can you pick the one that doesn’t fit? Granted, Orton is working hard and it shows. Orton’s in-ring work and promo’s have been top-quality. I believe if you were to take a survey, the bulk of the WWE audience want to love Randy, but feel he doesn’t let them. Now Seth Rollins is break-out star of the year, and Dean Ambrose has a huge fan base. Roman Reigns is going somewhere and fast; this match is full of potential and possibilities. I choose Seth Rollins to leave WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Sure, the WWE needs more subscribers, and fans tend to want to see a title change, but Reign’s winning the title right now would be bad timing, and Orton doesn’t need the strap. If Ambrose leaves champion, well, that would be lunacy.
Winner: Seth Rollins
