Let me preface this by saying that this is not an in depth analysis. For that I recommend checking out Mark Hitchcock’s work and of course, reading your own Bible.
Who is this one man who will be the leader of the world during the seven years of tribulation? Where will he come from? What does he look like? Could it be a woman? Is it someone we already know?
The first issue I would like to address is about whether we can identify the Antichrist today. I know people have a few ways they like to figure out who the Antichrist is. Revelation 13:16-18 tells us that we will be able to calculate who the Antichrist is by knowing he is a man and that his number is 666.
1. People try to make a person’s name equal 666 (which is the Mark of Beast) and if it doesn’t equal up then they will add in titles.
2. If the name does not add up in English then use another language. Like Hebrew or Latin.
3. Spelling of the name can change.
Reality is that we can try to make anyone seem to be the Antichrist. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8 tells us that no one will know who the Antichrist is prior to the rapture. Meaning that Revelation 13:16-18 is talking to the people on Earth during the tribulation.
What does “Antichrist” mean? Well, the definition of the prefix “anti” is “against, opposed to” or “instead of, in place of.” Meaning the Antichrist can be considered against Christ and a false god.
Many believe the Antichrist will even be Satan incarnate. These people are half right. At the midway point of the tribulation, Satan will take over the Antichrist’s body after Satan is kicked out of heaven and the Antichrist is murdered.
The book of Daniel was very prophetic and in chapters 2 and 7, God gives everyone a quick glimpse of future world history. What is so crazy is how He tells us about the five empires. In hindsight we can see how four of them were Babylon (head of gold), Medo-Persia (arms and chest of silver), Greece (stomachs and thighs of bronze), and Rome (legs of iron). Daniel tells us there will be a fifth empire run by ten kings (Daniel 7:24). This empire is the only prophecy yet to be fulfilled. In Daniel 7:8 we see how the little horn will rise among the kings and lead the revived Roman Empire, which I am sure will be called something else.
What will his nationality be? This question is actually a simple one as Daniel 9:26 tells us that he will be the same nationality as those who destroyed the second Jewish Temple way back in 70 A.D. The old Roman Empire destroyed the temple. But will he be Roman? He could be from a variety of places since the old Roman Empire consisted of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. This means that the American president is not the Antichrist so stop accusing him.
We know the Antichrist will not be revealed to us until after the rapture. He will be against Christ and possibly act as a false god, and will be from somewhere in Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. He will add up to 666, but that will only matter to those who are looking to identify him in the tribulation.
I want to leave you with one final thought. Since no one knows when the rapture will happen, not even Jesus, then that means Satan doesn’t know. I believe it is safe to say that he always has someone prepped to be the Antichrist at all times, throughout the ages. A little bit crazy to imagine, I know.
