Mutant Football League is making its debut on the Nintendo Switch! That’s right, this visceral football game with wisecracking foulmouthed commentary is back with the Dynasty Edition. MFL previously came to PC via Steam just over a year ago, and came to the digital stores of the PS4 and Xbox One in January of this year. John’s review of the PC version published on the day of the console release, and gave praise to the nostalgic gameplay that calls back to the days of NFL Blitz. having received multiple review copies, I got to engage in this brutal game of football against him online. I must say that I wholeheartedly agree with everything he has to say in his review.
Not only is this the first time that Mutant League has come to the Switch, but it is also the first time we will be seeing it on the shelves of our favorite retail store. This “Dynasty Edition” includes all of the DLC from the initial release along with brand new content that we have never seen before. If you want the complete Mutant Football League experience, this is the definitive package.
Here is the full list of features and content that Mutant Football League: Dynasty Edition has to offer:
When going hands-on with the Switch version, I took a deep dive into the Dynasty Mode. This mode takes the game of Mutant Football League from the bare-bones season mode of the NFL Blitz-era of football video games to the depth of the more recent Madden video games. You are the GM of a team that has fallen on hard times, and you have three seasons to take your team to the Mayhem Bowl and hopefully win it.
I love the concept of Dynasty Mode, but the odds are stacked against you from the start. Every other team stands at their usual overall ratings of 70 or above as you begin with a rating of 45. This can make the first season frustrating, as it is harder to win a game. Although, your players’ stats can be upgraded and every victory becomes that much sweeter in the shoes of an underdog. You also have a salary that can be used to recruit free agents, trade players, and even resurrect those who were killed in the previous game. Dynasty Mode’s difficulty can be brutal at the start but becomes rewarding in a multitude of ways.
With the Dyntasy Edition of the game, there are brand new times like the Purple Mutant Eaters and the Hexxon Oilers, though my favorite new team comes from a previously released DLC pack. It’s a Team called “Full Metal Mayhem” and is based on rock music. Their players are all named after famous musicians, and their stadium is even called Stairway to Heaven Arena. I especially love the look of the stadium since it is layered in chrome—that includes the field.
The developers have shown great attention to the teams since MFL first came out, and the same can be said for the new additions to the roster. Another of my favorite teams from one of the DLC packs is the Karcass City Creeps, which is obviously a parody of the Kansas City Chiefs. To have a QB by the name of Patrick Myholmes is right on the nose, but makes me laugh every time I see it. By simply looking at the team names and the roster of players, you’ll know the brand of humor that MFL is going for.
Lastly, an important addition to MFL are the new races. Originally released in the form of DLC packs, the Hellspawn Demons, and Rampaging Werewolves join the rest of the aliens, orcs, and robots that originally populated the team. I think the demons look great, but it was the werewolves I was very happy to see. In the argument of whether one prefers vampires or werewolves, I was “Team Jacob.” In my opinion, we need more Werewolves starring in video games. Until that happens, having them on my roster in Mutant Football League greatly pleases me.
Mutant Football League: Dynasty Edition is one of the first American football games to release on the Nintendo Switch, but the Mature content may not be for everyone. One of the best features is that the violence, commentary, and chaos can be turned down for those who want a cleaner experience. Players can engage in the singleplayer Dynasty or Season Modes, or play a game against friends and revival via local or online modes. I have personally enjoyed all of the new content that the Dynasty Edition has to offer.
