Sony has had a pretty smooth go of things so far this generation with sales that do not look to slow down anytime soon. As the undisputed sales lead of this current console generation Sony has already impressed the last couple of years at E3. However, going into E3 2016 I hope their focus remains solely on the games that are coming this year and beyond and they do not spend too much time on VR or alternative experiences like they have in the past with Playstation Move. Horizon: Zero Dawn will definitely be a part of Sony’s conference and it is rumored that God of War 4 might make an appearance. I am personally hoping for a reveal of The Last of Us 2. During the Playstation Conference Pre-Show Sony revealed that online mech shooter, Hawken, will be coming to PS4 this Summer.
After a formal orchestra performance, Sony opened its E2 2016 press conference with a surprise reveal of God of War 4. Simply titled God of War, the new game will feature a much older Kratos teaching a young boy to hunt, the game looks to include a new over the shoulder viewpoint and enhancements that improve upon the series’ popular combat mechanics. One of the beasts Kratos saves the child from speaks of Valhalla indicating that this time Kratos will be facing off against the Norse Pantheon. Following the reveal, Shawn Layden of Sony Entertainment America came on stage to speak briefly on the tragedy that occurred in Orlando last week.
Layden then went over what viewers could expect from Sony’s conference before introducing a sizzle reel of more upcoming exclusives including Days Gone from Sony Bend Studios, new footage of the much anticipated The Last Guardian from Team ICO which has a release date of October 25th, 2016, Sony also revealed new gameplay for upcoming PS4 exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn from Guerrila Games. In the gameplay trailer for Horizon: Zero Dawn the audience got a glimpse of how protagonist Aloy uses resources collected from the electronic wildlife to craft weapons and other useful gear. After the Horizon footage, a reveal trailer for Detroit: Become Human was shown. The game looks to combine detective elements from L.A. Noire along with decision making and environmental interactions seen in classic adventure games. Replaying the story for different outcomes seems to be encouraged. Following the reveal of Detroit: Become Human, Sony revealed Resident Evil VII which appears to be a reboot of sorts bringing the series back to its horror roots.Shortly after, Laden reappeared on stage to provide the release date for Resident Evil.
The new entry in the Resident Evil franchise will release on January 24th and will be compatible with Playstation VR. Playstation VR will debut on October 13th for $399.99. Playstation VR will launch with 50 games including Resident Evil and games created exclusively for the new platform. Next, Layden launched into the Playstation VR portion of the show starting with Playstation VR exclusive game, Farpoint. EA DICE and Criterion are also working on a Star Wars game for Playstation VR entitled Star Wars: Battlefront X-Wing VR Mission. Batman Arkham VR was also revealed to be in development at Rocksteady. While Final Fantasy 15 appeared on stage earlier today during the Microsoft press conference, Sony also revealed that Final Fantasy 15 will also feature VR support in the form of Final Fantasy 15 VR experience.
Following the VR portion of Sony’s show, fans were treated to a new look at Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare which featured space dog-fighting as well as the standard FPS gameplay Call of Duty fans know to expect. The game will launch on November 4th, 2016. We also got a look at Modern Warfare Remastered which is included with all pre-order copies of Infinite Warfare.
After the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer, Layden returned to the stage to drop another bombshell reveal that Crash Bandicoot, Crash 2, and Crash: Warped will be coming to PS4 fully remastered. Crash will also make a guest appearance in Skylanders Imaginators, which is coming in October.
Sony then played a trailer for the upcoming Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The trailer concluded by revealing that a demo is available now on PS4.
Andrew House, of Sony Interactive Entertainment, then appeared on stage to introduce Hideo Kojima who revealed his new project since leaving Konami. Featuring Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead fame, Kojima’s new game Death Stranding appears to have been born from his original vision for Silent Hills.
Following that, a new reveal trailer confirmed that Insomniac Games is making a new Spider Man game that appears to be a PS4 ecxlusive and does not appear to be based on the new upcoming movie.
Next, Layden thanked those in the audience for attending the show and the viewers at home for watching before closing out the show with a live demo of new IP, Days Gone. The demo featured gameplay somewhat reminiscent of The Last of Us with zombie like creatures attacking survivors in a Post-Pandemic setting.
