Perhaps most well known for creating the previously successful Duke Nukem franchise, 3D Realms fell from grace with the release of their most recent follow-up, Duke Nukem Forever. Though development of the game lasted 15 years and was passed on to many publishers and developers before finally being finished and released by Gearbox, Duke Nukem Forever launched to lackluster reviews and was criticized for its brazen, over-the-top raunchy humor and degradation of its female characters.
3D Realms seems to be attempting to clean up this image with the announcement of their newest title, Bombshell. Players will take on the role of Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison, a mercenary with a robotic arm and revolver that shoots three bullets at time.Shelly is also an expert at defusing bombs which is perhaps what earned her the nickname, Bombshell.
While story details have not been revealed it is clear from the E3 2015 trailer above that Shelly will be fighting off aliens in space with her trusty pistol. While certainly without as much of the nudity and swearing as was in their previous Duke Nukem games, the basic premise doesn’t appear to be much of a departure from what 3D Realms has made in the past.
Despite its similarities to 3D Realms’ previous titles, the genre mash-up with Bombshell is an interesting one. The game is a top-down isometric-viewpoint RPG/Shooter combo which looks to play more like Diablo than Duke Nukem.
Bombshell will launch later this year on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
